How to Start a Mobile Food Business

30 May , 2016

When you are thinking of food trucks, plenty of you are used to picture images of big and ugly gray trucks that sell greasy food with a lot of calories. But, the times have changed, and now, even the most popular chefs are getting into this business. This kind of business, the ”food truck” business, is fun, but it’s not an easy task. A lot of successful owners report 50-60 hour work weeks, but if you are used to this working style, then you should try it.

Before you decide what type of food you will sell, you must consider how you want to sell it. Obviously, your decision will depend on your budget and on your experience at running a business. You should also choose the size of the business you want to start and how you will work (full time or part time). These are only a few of the considerations you should have in mind as you proceed.

The license

You may think that is very easy to have a mobile food business, but you shouldn’t forget about the local law requirements. Each state has their own requirements, but the most common ones are the health certificates, the truck permits, and the sanitary requirements. This is one of the most important aspects of your entrepreneurial pursuit. Undoubtedly, your local health department will have to inform you about sanitary standards. Once you’ve got your licenses and the permits you need, it will be easier to start.

Buy a truck or a cart

If you have a tight budget, you should choose to start with a food cart, because it is not so expensive. It seems that the health departments have the same rules for the food trucks as they do for restaurants, that’s why every food truck must have a special equipment.

Before you buy one of these carts, you should keep in mind what kind of food you’re planning to sell. If you intend to sell hot foods, that you will need to prepare on-site, or pizza, you will need a large truck with all its special equipment. On the other hand, if you opt for selling food that you have prepared in advance in your home, then you only need a cart or a smaller truck in which you can just keep it warm.

Find a niche

The most important aspect and the key to success in this business sector (are) is becoming a top expert. You must find your own niche and bring something new. It’s recommended to do some research about what’s already in your area, and after that come up with your creation.
