When you are running or managing a company the most difficult situation, you can deal with, is one of your employees to develop a substance addiction. Even if all businesses have a clear drug and alcohol policy, and you conduct regular drug testing, you cannot fire a person who definitely needs help. But when you are dealing with this type of situation, you do not know what solutions you can find. First, you have to know that it is important to learn how to spot the persons who are addicted to substances before conducting the drug testing. Also, you should make sure that you will protect your business from the situation when an employee who is addicted to substances puts it in danger.

What are the signs of substance abuse?

In order to be able to help your employees, if they are dealing with substance addiction you should contact drug rehab centers and ask those if a professional can guide you on how to detect substance addicts. Here are some common signs:

  • They are asking their coworkers if they can borrow them money
  • They are asking their salary check in advance
  • They leave a lingering smell of alcohol
  • They are more irritable, aggressive, or paranoiac
  • They are sleeping at their workplace
  • They are hyperactive, but they are not productive
  • They have constricted or dilated pupils
  • They have glazed or bloodshot eye
  • They are missing work regularly

How can you deal with the situation?

You should not ignore the signs of substance abuse, because it is advisable they to receive help from holistic treatment centers as soon as possible in order to fight their addiction. It is an uncomfortable situation, but you have to discuss with them. It is important for you to find out what is wrong and how can you help them fix this situation. Check the company health plan, because some of the insurance programs offer employees coverage if they are dealing with substance addictions and they want to enter rehab.

Also, you should help them get the support they need to break the addiction, search together support groups they can join. Make sure that the support group have meetings that do not conflict with the work schedule from your company.

In case the employee does not admit that they are abusing on substances then you can ask them to have a drug test. Make sure that you remain as discrete as possible when you are dealing with this type of situation, you do not want to ruin their reputation.
